“More Light” is written as a prayer for illumination, asking for the Holy Spirit’s help before scripture is read in worship.  The Song is based on words from the last sermon given by Pastor John Robinson to the Pilgrims before they left for North America: “[God] hath yet more light and truth to break forth from [God’s] holy word.”

Churches will sometimes use this as a gospel acclamation, singing it both before and after the reading.  It has also been used after the sermon.
